For COLORED Only (2019)

The purpose of my Black History concept is to remind my people of how great we are, despite facing adversity. ⁣

‘For Colored Only’ was a sign seen pretty much everywhere during the time of segregation and the Jim Crow laws. Through segregation, we were outcasted and forced to make a way for ourselves. We were forced to be at our highest, through one of the lowest points in our history.

During segregation, we had to provide for ourselves. In doing so, we opened our own stores. We owned our own businesses. We had our own beaches. We had our own police. We had our own theaters, hotels, transportation, jewelers, and pool halls. We were made to be by ourselves and through that, we held ourselves up. We were self sufficient and great, even in the face of hate. ⁣

The purpose of this design is to remind us of how strong we were and STILL are. We are looked at today as the weakest most destructive race on earth, and I just wanted to create something for us by us to remind us of all that we’ve made it through. We are survivors. We are great. We are unbreakable. We are strong. We’ve always been.
